39 of 52: W. Somerset Maugham’s The Bum

Maugham authored such classic novels as Of Human Bondage and The Painted Veil (both of which have been turned into movies), he practically created spy fiction with his character Ashenden (who would influence John Le Carre and Ian Fleming with James Bond), and managed to also write many great short stories, plays and essays.
