Each Monday, I continue to share Western movie reviews as I go through the process of finishing post and releasing my 12 Westerns in 12 Months during 2020. I am watching these films not from an audience perspective but as a filmmaker, as a student of the genre.
Week Eighty Five: Wagons East
It’s fun to see Candy again and I’m glad he made a Western before going out. I can’t believe he was only 43. The five days of filming done without him on this picture was undetected by this viewer. I also like how out of place Richard Lewis is in a Western. It makes me fantasize about casting Louis CK or someone like that in one of mine.
Yes, it’s a stupid movie but it’s a pretty harmless one too. There are only a few clever gags in the whole thing, my favorite being the “we need a sign” moment near the beginning that sets the whole thing off. However, the film makes me smile and rarely made me cringe. That’s not something I can say for most westerns made these days.
