GO WEST (1925)

Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

We recently screened Buster Keaton’s GO WEST at our third annual Tombstone Film Festival. I programmed the film as a 100 year anniversary screening but truth be told I’d never seen it before, a risk that paid off.

GO WEST may not be filled with Buster’s iconic, mind-blowing stunts like his better known films such as THE GENERAL but it’s a clever, sometimes hilarious motion picture. The beginning is a bit slow but as soon as Keaton gets mixed up with his cow friend (an incredibly cute on-screen companion), the movie keeps moving faster and faster until its impressive, totally wild finale. The spectacle of the cattle running through the city, Buster on the train, and all of the other “real” things on screen (things we’ll never see done for real again) make GO WEST a wonderful watch.

Watched at Schieffelin Hall in Tombstone, Arizona.
