Each Monday, I continue to share Western movie reviews as I go through the process of finishing post and releasing my 12 Westerns in 12 Months during 2020. I am watching these films not from an audience perspective but as a filmmaker, as a student of the genre.

Week Eighty Eight: Against a Crooked Sky

This was a lot better than I predicted. Though it has its fair share of Disney-like moments, it also has some gritty ones. Boone is of course the highlight of the production. Playing a good guy this time with a bad attitude, his grizzled experience and wit carries the movie which would have been nothing without him.

The concept of this hidden tribe is a fascinating one but ultimately under-developed by the filmmakers who choose to spend their time on other things. The sacrificial twist is also a good choice but one that isn’t quite earned by the narrative that leads up to it.

It was great to see Arches National Park, a place I have a great fondness for.

Seen on Amazon Prime.
